Opening the annals of New China¡¯s development of science and technology, you will see many inventions and creations closely connected with the city of Changchun. There are 27 full-time institutions of higher learning including Jilin University and Northeast Normal University and 97 independent scientific research institutions including Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics and 38 key national laboratories and open laboratories including the United Key National Laboratory for Integrated Photoelectronics and Key National Laboratory for Dynamic Automobile Simulation. CAS Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics is China¡¯s earliest and largest optical research and production base, in which the country¡¯s sole optical literature database is set. Since its founding, the institute has made a great number of achievements in scientific research leading in the country or even in the world, making outstanding contributions to the development of the atom bomb and hydrogen bomb and the successful launching of the man-made satellite and Shenzhou V spaceship. CAS Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry is one of the country¡¯s most important scientific research and production bases for applied chemistry, leading in the country in the fields of high molecular polymeric materials, rare earth materials, thermal shrinkage materials and others. Changchun has 575 thousand various professionals, scientists and engineers including 28 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, providing strong human resources at different levels which can meet the various needs of the construction and development in many respects in the country. A number of academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering such as Wang Daheng, Yu Ruihuang, Tang Aoqing, Hao Shui and Xia Xianzhu have made the scientific and technological achievements that attract worldwide attention in their research fields. They, like the bright stars, have radiated with the eternal light of wisdom, which is shining on the road for successors to go forward, leaving their eternal names in the annals of science and technology of the People¡¯s Republic.
